Q&A

  1. What is the difference between the Sample and the Dictionary (Complete)?
The Sample contains approximately 1,000 expressions, whereas the Dictionary includes more than 5,000.
  2. Why am I unable to access the Dictionary?
Access to the complete version of the Dictionary requires membership. When you purchase the printed Dictionary, you will automatically be enrolled as a member. To receive your access password, simply send us proof of purchase, such as your receipt.
  3. Which language varieties are used in the Dictionary?
For the most part, the Dictionary focuses on U.S. English (US) and Brazilian Portuguese (BR). Occasionally, expressions from other varieties have been included, particularly British (UK/GB), Australian (AUS), and Irish (IE) English. Some expressions typical of European Portuguese (PT) are also included in the Dictionary. These expressions are labeled with the abbreviation for each variety in parentheses.
  4. Can I search by topic? For example, if I want to find only idiomatic expressions related to colors.
Yes. You can search various topics using these keywords (in parentheses) or their respective links.
  5. I searched for the expression “nail something down,” but I couldn’t find anything. Does this mean it isn’t included in the Dictionary?
Not necessarily. We suggest trying other combinations. For example, “nail down something,” “nail down (something),” or “nail (something) down.” The pronouns “something,” “somebody,” “someone’s,” and “one’s” may or may not appear in parentheses, which can affect search results depending on the combinations you use.

If you cannot find a long expression, try using only the key terms. For example: “wild horses” instead of “wild horses could not drag (someone) away”.

  6. What does the blue star icon after the definition of each expression represent?
The blue star is used to introduce an example (or illustrative sentence) using the English expression. Each example is followed by its translation in parentheses.
  7. What makes this dictionary unique compared with its competitors?
This dictionary is the result of more than two years of extensive research by the author, with contributions from other translators, cultural specialists, and native speakers of English and Portuguese, in addition to the author’s own cultural and linguistic knowledge of the subject.

Each expression is accompanied by its corresponding translation and one or more bilingual illustrative examples, allowing you, at your discretion, to verify the translation provided either by comparing the two versions or by consulting the reference sources listed at the end of each entry. The Dictionary also includes interesting facts, etymologies, illustrative videos, and more.

The Dictionary contains more than 5,000 expressions, including proverbs, sayings, and phrasal verbs, all properly defined, illustrated, translated, and referenced.
